Tinted Lenses and Their Purposes

The Color of Your Lenses are More Than a Fashion Statement

As the providers of the best selling wrap-a-round protective lenses in the medical market, The Rollens Company cares about the health of your eyes and the eyes of your patients.

It’s obvious you also care about the health of people’s eyes – or you wouldn’t be interested in Rollens protective eyewear.

In keeping with our healthy eye theme and as a reminder to sunglass wearers everywhere, let’s look at the various tints that are available with regular sunglasses and how they help with a person’s vision.

First, any sunglasses that block 100% of UV rays to 400 nanometers are considered good sunglasses. These glasses come with different tints, including:

  • Amber/Orange,
  • Gray/Green,
  • Copper/Rose.

While many people think that the color of their lenses are a fashion statement, there is much more going on here. Lens tints are an integral part of UV protection.

For example, amber/orange tints can block or alter blue light up to 527 nanometers and can help reduce the possibility of macular degeneration of the retina.

Dark gray/green tints are best for bright or sunny days because they reduce the amount of light that transmits through the eye.

Finally, brown- or rose-colored glasses are best used when driving because they allow for a higher contrast, making it easier to see other cars and road signs.

So when you’re picking out a pair of sunglasses or lenses, think about how they will be used. You want to make sure you get the tint that will work best for what you are doing.

As a side note, Rollens lenses are available in Platinum (or dark) Gray for both dental and eye-care patients, Gold Amber for eye patients and Diamond Clear for dental patients.

For dental patients, our Platinum Gray lenses offer 100% UV protection, which protects patients' eyes during any UV-curing procedure.

For eye patients, the Platinum Gray lenses are great for protecting post-mydriatic, light-sensitive eyes because they are so effective at blocking out harmful sunlight and wrap-a-round the face to prevent annoying side glare.

Rollens’ Gold Amber lenses have been a standard “go-to” lens in the post-mydriatic field.  Just like the traditional Platinum Gray lens, Rollens Gold provides 100% ultraviolet protection with only 6% to 8% visible light transmission.

In addition, the Amber Gold lenses block better than 95% of blue light, making them a good fit for individuals who have undergone photodynamic therapy (PDT), also known as photochemotherapy.
